Feast of St. Luke, Evangelist

  • Holy Rosary Church 375 Northeast Clackamas Street Portland, OR, 97232 United States (map)

THE FEAST OF SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST will be observed with a special Dominican Rite Mass on Friday, October 18, at 7:00 PM. Liturgical music will include Orlandus Lassus’ Missa ‘Bell’ amfitrit’ altera’ sung by Cantores in Ecclesia. A wine and cheese reception in Siena Hall will follow the Mass.

SAINT LUKE is described in one of the Pauline epistles as “my dear friend, Luke, the doctor” (Colossians 4:14). He is the author of the third gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. Both Eusebius and Jerome say he was probably a Greek and may have come from Antioch. It is uncertain where and when he wrote his gospel, though it was probably between A.D. 70 and 90 (Eusebius says before Paul’s death, Jerome says after). Saint Luke is the patron of painters and physicians and is represented in art as an ox.
