EXHIBIT ON CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING AND THE MONDRAGON CORPORATION

Friday and Saturday, July 11 and 12: Tours at 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 PM in Siena Hall

Sunday, July 13: Presentation at 10:00 AM in Siena Hall

In the Basque country in northern Spain, a company called Mondragon defies expectations. Most of the workers are part-owners of the company and participate in its management. The highest paid workers never make more than 9 times what the lowest do (compared with more than 400-to-1 for the standard US corporation). Yet the company is one of the strongest in the Spanish economy. Its secret: It was born out of the social doctrine of the Catholic Church. The Mondragon exhibit explores the birth of Catholic Social Teaching—the body of doctrine in which the popes have addressed the social, economic, and environmental problems of the modern era—and how these teachings have been used to develop new economic models that promote justice, communal life, and full human flourishing.
